Hamlin win overshadowed by Newman crash at Daytona 500

This year’s Daytona 500 champion, Denny Hamlin, was crowned a day late due to rain delay but a win is a win right?

Daytona 500 2020 Race

The 62nd edition of the annual Daytona International Speedway NASCAR Cup Series race started as scheduled on February 16th but had to be suspended for the next day on lap 20 due to persistent rain showers.

Reigning champion Denny Hamlin came in first ahead of Ryan Blaney and Chris Buescher. This 3rd win for Hamlin was overshadowed by the crash on the first overtime restart where Ryan Newman’s car flipped upside down and set on fire as he skid across the finish line. Concerns quickly turned to Newman as he was transported directly to a local hospital, Halifax medical Center, after being taken out of his car.

NASCAR tweeted a status update on his condition late Tuesday night.

We’re glad to hear Newman’s injuries are not life-threatening and wish him a speedy recovery. He was still able to make the top 9 ranking despite this setback.

Here are the Top 10 who made the list for this year’s race:

1. Denny Hamlin (starting position 21)
